St. Mary of the Assumption has applied for and received a grant from the State Historical Society to assist in paying for the restoration of the painting of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The painting of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was produced in 1868, by the Swiss Artist Melchior Paul Deschwanden. During his life Deschwanden was a prolific and well known artist in Europe. He was primarily known for his ecclesiastical paintings.
After nearly 150 years hanging in St. Mary's the painting was in need of professional restoration. After a complete restoration from Parma Conservation in Chicago, Il we are able return the Assumption of the Blessed Virgiin Mary to the wall just below the Rose window and above the choir area. This restoration would not have been possible without the generous donations of our parishoners and the money received from this grant . This has allowed us to bring this important piece of St. Mary's history back to our parish in a renewed look.
